Well today a coon dog field trial dog is about 7/8 gray hound with something else mixed in there. Now ten years ago they might have been half but then again ten years ago we were using phones with cords attached to them. Now I'm on the world wide web with my phone talking to you. So ya see things change it happens all the time. I bet 100 years ago they might have actually been coon dogs but that's not the way it is anymore. But if you want to run red bones, blue ticks, ect you can the entry fees are the same for all bred of dog.

Ah You missed the point In my mind what makes a field tTrial dog is -- Straight legs indicating speed Deep chested for air capasity Wide back over the kidney area Personally like smooth hair Has manners on the lead and at the kennel Will mind And several other things that can be used to make it a finely tuned running Treeing machine Thats part of what I think makes up a Field Trial dog Just interested in other folks ideas

Every Field Trial dog I ever owned was treated like a pet These dogs to-day will do more for a pat and encouraging words then anything you could give them

Some people say the better dogs are Black Others say they need a wide head I just wonder what some people look for in a dog

It was my attempt to start a discussion that would lead to some discovery However!! It turns out no body knows what a Field Trial dog cosists of I even looked for some one to say "A vein big enough to get a #22 needle into"

A field trial dog is a sporting dog that is able to run a scent track through all types of terrian and weather and come to a "finish tree" and bark at or up the tree. thats my definition!

also it helps if the dog is serious and has heart or grit.I agree with Joe.follow a track with scent and bark treed.

I was visiting with a dog man ,who is a very good dog trainer.we were looking at a dog who had just ran a track and he said that dog was a perfect example of a fieldtrial dog.good legs, cat footed, deep chest, bones not too big but slim enough for speed.I am not very good at describing dogs so someday if said dog is at a race will point it out to you.everyone likes a different type dog and lately the more grey they show the better people like them but the more the dogs get hurt as they are'nt as tough as some of the older ones. There are some dogs running now in the claims which I think are tough races, that are older and a little crippled from age or whatever that are very tough to beat.so to each his own.

I think a field trial dog is a dog of (most likely greyhound) mix-breeding, that not only has speed and stamina but also good natural instincts. Without them, following a track and treeing isn't likely. Even without the speed, a dog that is game oriented should still follow a scent and run a track. Finding a dog that can win line and tree is near impossible, but as long as you've got instincts to work with you stand half a chance.
